April 19, 2020

Dear Carrillo Families,

I hope this email finds you well and refreshed from the weekend. THANK YOU so much for helping your children get logged on to their google classrooms and working through assignments. As an entire school of close to 900 students, 99% of our students engaged last week in Distance Learning, which is outstanding. We truly could not have done this without YOU, the parents and guardians, who are making a commitment, and sacrifice, for your children to continue to learn. I know that it hasn’t been easy for many families, but I genuinely believe that over time, the routine will get better if we stick with the schedule and focus on training our kids to navigate these resources together. Thank you for demonstrating grit, perseverance toward long term goals, despite initial setbacks. Students and families will all emerge from this crisis stronger, and ready to take on life’s challenges!

Each grade level team of teachers will continue to meet and discuss what is working and how we can make adjustments to meet their students where they are. Just remember, these learning modules are flexible, and you have the power to modify as you feel appropriate. However, like the start of any new school year, it takes a lot of energy to get a new routine started, and over time, things get smoother if we stick with it.

Student Support Services

Please lookout for an email tomorrow from our School Social Worker, Maren Marbery, and School Psychologist, Jason Clark, that outlines their availability to support your child’s social-emotional and academic needs during this time.

Chromebook Distribution

If you are still in need of a device for your children, Mrs. Keeton will be available tomorrow, Monday, April 20, between 8:30 am-12:30 pm, to distribute a device.  Please drive through the Carrillo drop-off loop and pull up in front of the MPR. We are hoping that this can be our last week of distributing devices for all who need one, so please stop by tomorrow.

Virtual Family Bingo Night Last Saturday

Thank you to all of the families who attended the virtual Bingo Night last night. I believe we had close to 300 bingo cards and over 100 people on the online meeting! A huge thank you to Joey and Candice Lai for organizing this amazing event and bringing our Carrillo community “together”. We appreciate your commitment to Carrillo and your ongoing dedication to providing fun family activities, even though our doors are closed. You both continue to amaze me, and I can’t wait to see what the PTO has in store next!!

Music, PE, STEM, and Library (aka. “Specials”) Website

To make it easier for families to locate the various “specials” or content areas outside of the core academic subjects, Mrs. McCoy, Mrs. Rinehart, Ms. Beninger, and Mrs. Odenwalder have created the following website https://sites.google.com/view/carrillospecials. On this site, you will find links to each of our “specials” teachers. We encourage you to bookmark this webpage on your child’s device and train them to self navigate (if they are old enough) through all of the wonderful activities created by our very talented “specials” team. That way, Mondays can “Start with the Arts” and other fun online activities. You can also direct them to this site after lunch every Tuesday-Friday for a variety of enrichment activities and read alouds.
