Dear Carrillo Families,

Thank you for your support by attending the Flippin’ Pizza dine-out last week! It was fun to see a few Carrillo families while grabbing dinner.

Expansion to In-Person Model

You should have received an email this week from Interim Superintendent Dr. Campbell titled “SMUSD Community Update 4/21/2021.” Among many other important topics, they discussed expanding our in-person learning model (2nd-5th grade only), which is expected to take effect next week, May 4. Please see below-

Safe In-Person Expansion

The Governing Board discussed recommendations for expanding the current in-person models at our elementary and secondary schools. The full presentation can be found here. The Board gave direction to move forward with the following expansion plan to take effect on Tuesday, May 4:

Elementary Expansion

Grades TK-1 Tuesday - Friday, AM/PM (Will remain on their current schedule)

Grades 2 - 5 Tuesday - Friday, 8:45 a.m. - 2:25 p.m.

Given this direction, our Carrillo staff is busily preparing for our 2nd-5th graders to begin attending four days per week. Desks are being added to all classrooms and spaced out to ensure a 3ft distance between students. We are also finalizing changes to our lunch/recess schedule, specials schedule, and intervention times, so please expect some modifications to your child’s daily plan.

Parking Lot

The expansion of our in-person model for 2nd-5th will significantly impact our parking lot. Twice as many students will be dropped off between 8:15-8:45 and picked up at 2:25 than we are accustomed to this year. Please expect some delays during pickup and drop-off beginning the week of May 4 as we evaluate our current procedures and think through possible changes. Thank you for your patience and understanding as our community adjusts.

2nd-5th graders will continue to bring their Chromebooks to school each day under the expanded model. However, due to Covid mitigation procedures, and the variety of different Chromebook models in the hands of students, we cannot charge their devices at school overnight. It would be very helpful if families ensure the Chromebooks are plugged in at home each evening to attend school with a full battery each day.

“Are you Returning?” Survey

Each year we ask Carrillo families to complete this survey to indicate whether their children are returning to Carrillo next year. Your participation in this survey allows us to understand better how many students we should expect in each grade level and prepare an adequate number of classrooms for their return. The survey helps teachers have a more concrete idea of where they will be teaching to prepare for the upcoming school year and avoids last-minute grade level changes. Please complete the survey at your earliest convenience.

5th-Grade Events!

Kickball: This week, 5th-graders will be playing several kickball games on campus. Please have your child wear their 5th-grade shirt to school on one of the days.

5th-Grade Promotion: Please mark your calendars for Monday morning, June 7, for an in-person and live-streamed 5th-grade promotion. We are still finalizing the details, but here are some general guidelines for what to expect-

  1. We will separate the promotion into three different ceremonies (two classes at a time).
  2. Each child will be limited to two family members each.
  3. Family members will need to pre-register/RSVP, wear masks, complete a symptom screening and maintain 6ft social distance throughout the event.
  4. After the ceremony, we will release audience members by row to limit congregating on campus.

We will provide more information as soon as all of the details are finalized.

5th-Grade Tour:

Unfortunately, we are unable to take the 5th-grade field trip to SEMS for the yearly tour and presentation due to the COVID restrictions. Instead, the middle schools will be preparing a video introduction for all incoming 6th-grade students.

State Testing Update

In a typical year, students in grades 3-5 take the California Assessment of Student Progress and Performance (CAASPP) around this time. These are standardized exams in reading, mathematics, and science (science is 5th only) that California mandates at least 95% of students participate in taking. Results are tied to the California Dashboard and official school ratings. However, the State of California has allowed for flexibility this year in allowing local districts to use other forms of local standardized testing. Thus, the San Marcos Unified School District has decided to use the 3rd iReady Diagnostic for testing purposes and not have students participate in the CAASPP this year. The iReady system expects us to administer three diagnostic tests throughout the year, one at the beginning, middle, and end of each school year, to adequately measure student growth. Therefore, students were already going to take this test regardless. The only piece that changes is that students will not need to take the CAASPP test in addition to the third iReady exam. I think this is good news because it allows our teachers more time for instruction. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me.
