Principal’s Newsletter
Carrillo Elementary School

April 28, 2019

Dear Carrillo Families,

Thank you to everyone who made it to our Family Magic Show on Friday. We had over 440 Carrillo community members in attendance, making it a huge success. Nothing fills me with more joy as a principal than seeing huge turnouts at these school events! Special thanks to Drea Colores, Candice Lai, Jonnette and Alex Burke, Lisa Braun, Joey Lai, and Jen Merritt for their volunteerism in making this event happen.

Volunteer Appreciation this Friday
Speaking of volunteering...We have the BEST and maybe the LARGEST group of volunteers at Carrillo and would like the opportunity to thank you for your service.

This Friday, May 3 from 8:45-10am, we will be honoring all of Carrillo Elementary volunteers with a special Flag Salute and breakfast. If you volunteer in the classroom, in the PTO, at the running track, for Arts Attack, in School Site Council, as a room parent, at a PTO sponsored event, or in any other way (I know I have missed a few) please join us this Friday! Rush Coffee will provide drip coffee for volunteers during drop off. There will be a school-wide performance during Flag Salute followed by breakfast in the MPR and more entertainment! We hope to see you there!

LCAP Parent Survey
The Local Control Accountability Plan, LCAP Parent Survey is available on our school homepage. For easy access, please click here.

This survey is an opportunity to provide input into the LCAP (how the District spends money) and provide feedback based on your perceptions and experiences as parents of San Marcos students. I would very much appreciate it if you took the time to complete this survey. As a school site, we use the data gathered in this survey to set goals for the school and allocate resources (money) toward school improvement. We also gain a sense of the degree in which you feel that your voice is heard, that you are involved in your child’s education, that you feel that your child is safe, and so on. Put simply, I take these results very seriously and would love to have high participation to yield accurate/useful data.

Parent Information Nights at Carrillo
We had a great turnout of parents from around the District to our Social Media Safety night last week. I appreciate everyone who was in attendance! It was a very informative night and worth the time and money we spent on providing this for our families. Our School Site Council decided we will allocate site funds to have Jon Moffit back next year for any parents who missed it. We find this information to be vital for ALL parents in the digital age. Although he provided many ways to monitor our children on social media, I left with the understanding that it isn’t possible to monitor all activity without my kid's knowledge. In addition to teaching parents what sites are available, what they do, and what the dangers are of each, Mr. Moffit also provided tips on how to create/negotiate a family contract for digital use and the importance of open communication with children regarding the dangers of social media and gaming. I will be working with our Social Worker, Rebeca Jimenez in making resources available to all who are interested.

Our next Parent Information night will take place this Wednesday, May 1 at 6 pm. We have partnered with the San Marcos Prevention Coalition to provide information on Drug Trends and Prevention, including vaping. Unfortunately, the vaping industry has created many vaping devices that make it difficult for parents, teachers, and administrators to easily identify them as a smoking device (some look like credit cards or flash drives). I’m hoping this information night will provide the knowledge we need to close the information gap and better support our children.

State Testing Coming Soon!
Our State Mandated testing for all 3rd-5th graders will begin May 13. We will be sending home the testing schedule and information letter this week. Please look out for that information coming home. Regarding testing, my hope is that students and parents look at state testing as a “celebration” of all the new skills they learned and not to feel stressed or anxious. They should take it seriously, but since the test mirrors the work they do all year long, I look at it as the final performance of everything they have been learning and practicing. Although you have the right to opt your child out, the state of California also penalizes schools for low testing attendance due to opt-outs (a bit of a catch 22 right??). If you feel your child would be negatively impacted by testing, I would ask that you set up a meeting with either Mrs. Keeton or me first, so we can collaborate on ways we can support them through it, rather than opting out. Again, there shouldn’t be any additional stress put on testing but rather an encouragement to do your best, just like all other school work. In conjunction with testing, our schoolwide character focus will be on “Grit” which involves having passion for long term goals and demonstrating perseverance. Please check out the playbook for grit on character lab by clicking here.

Leo Carrillo Ranch Parking
The Leo Carrillo Ranch parking lot will be closed every Friday for the remainder of the year due to wedding season. We will still be opening the back gate if you park in the neighborhood or for your child to walk home.

Spring Fling and Auction (Parents Only)
The Annual Spring Fling Auction is back, and better than ever! Come join fellow Carrillo parents and teachers May 18th at 5:30 pm at St. Mark Golf Club as we enjoy a night out and raise money for Carrillo Elementary. The event will feature an outdoor lounge, casino, music by DJ Sam, wine pull, gourmet heavy hors d'oeuvres, hosted bar, and of course our signature auction. Our theme this year will be "The White Party" so come dressed to impress in your best all-white attire (you don’t need to wear white to attend, just dress comfortably). All proceeds from the event will go back to Carrillo Elementary to help develop our students into leaders of the future. Don't miss the best event of the year. Tickets are on sale now.
