Carrillo Elementary School

Dear Carrillo Families,

This is your Principal, Gary Pope, excited to welcome you to the start of the 2018-19 school year.

As Colts, we will begin the year by building relationships with one another and forming a solid foundation for our school community. By developing positive relationships, we strive for all students to feel safe, connected, and supported on campus. Part of what makes Carrillo unique is our large enrollment yet “family-like” atmosphere. Parents, teachers, students, staff, and administration all come together to form a community of learners that strive to ensure every child is prepared to meet the challenges of the 21st-century learning and work environment. Students are challenged through high expectations and a rigorous curriculum. Also, we believe that students should have opportunities to pursue their passions, think critically, and be creative.

Much of what we can achieve at Carrillo is due to our amazing Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The PTO raises funds that support our intervention programs, STEM lab, art,classroom materials, engaging assemblies, lunch activities, family nights, instructional technology, and so much more! We are extremely lucky to have many dedicated individuals who work very hard to make Carrillo the best it can be for all students. There are many fun events planned for this year, and it is a great way to stay informed and get involved.

Assistant Principal Linda Heinrich has taken a new position at Joli Ann Leichtag Elementary. She worked at Carrillo for four years and has made a tremendous impact on student learning. We will miss her dearly and wish her the best in her new role. Despite heading to a new school, Mrs. Heinrich has worked hard throughout the summer to prepare us for a successful school year. Also, Intervention Specialist Shannon Williams will be providing extra assistance to help the front office until we have someone in place. We are hoping to have this position filled by the end of September.

We are currently in the process of balancing class sizes due to fluctuating enrollment. As a result, class placements will be finalized on August 17. On August 17, we will post your child's teacher assignment on the website as well as on the MPR doors.

I trust the professionalism and commitment of every teacher at our school to deliver high-quality instruction that will meet the needs of each learner. During the first two weeks of school, I will be in classrooms, out at recess, in the lunch areas, ensuring safety in the drop-off and pick-up areas, and connecting with students. As a result, I will not be able to hold parent meetings during this time to discuss classroom changes. Please see the front office if you would like to schedule a meeting for the third week of school.

With the addition of the solar panels, we were able to learn new ways to improve the function of our parking lots. Please note that we have new parking lot procedures. The main lot will be used for staff only. If you are visiting campus, please park along the side lots or in the overflow lot. Please do not park and leave your car in the bus lane or KOC lot at any time. During drop off and pick up times (8:15-8:45 and 3:10-3:45), it is vital that everyone turns right and goes through the loop as opposed to driving straight into the KOC lot. This allows for a safe and efficient flow of traffic. Also, when dropping off and picking up, please pull all of the way forward. You may be tempted to stop as soon as you see your child. However, we will have staff members there to assist you in locating your child and getting them safely to your vehicle. If we all follow the procedures and work together, we will prevent congestion, ensure safety, and decrease the time it takes to get through the parking lot. Thank you for your help.

During the first week of school parents will be allowed to walk their children on campus before school from 8:15-8:40 a.m. to help them. The district-wide secure campus policy will go into effect the second week of school on Monday, August 27th.

After school, your children will be escorted to the front of the school through the main gate. You can pick your child up via vehicle (pick up lane) or park in the overflow lot to walk and meet your child in front of the school. There are designated large blue numbers painted on the concrete out front for grades 1-5. Plan to meet your student on the designated grade level number. Siblings can wait together in one of the designated spots. PM Kindergarten students will meet parents outside of the kindergarten gate where they will be waiting with their teachers. TK students will wait inside the main front gate with their teacher.

My goal is to keep you informed and engaged in our school as much as possible. I will send a weekly newsletter every Sunday night (I promise they aren’t usually this long). In addition to these emails, please check the school website, PTO website, and PTO Facebook page for more updates and detailed information. I also use to send short messages and reminders. For everyone that signed up last year, I bumped all classes up one grade level so you should be enrolled.
