August 18, 2019
Dear Carrillo Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year! I hope you all are refreshed from the summer and excited to start the school year. I am very grateful for the opportunity to serve as your principal at this excellent school. Carrillo Elementary School turns 20 years old this year, a milestone we are eager to celebrate throughout the year.

We are looking forward to connecting with all members of our community as we work together toward our shared vision: to create a community of passionate lifelong learners with a strong sense of citizenship. With student growth and achievement at the center of all we do, we are excited to open our doors and begin a great school year.

During this first week of school, I will be inviting students to Back to School Assemblies where I will introduce our supervision staff, our cafeteria staff, school social worker and many other members of our school community. We will discuss the Carrillo Way, “Do the right thing, because it’s the right thing to do, even when no one is looking,” as well as how to care for the school, earn citizenship awards and why it's important to take care of your community. We will also have an all-school flag salute this Friday where I will introduce our character focus for the month, Self-Control, and kick off the school year together. We have the best kids and families, and I am excited to reconnect as a community of learners.

Parent Communication

For those that are new to Carrillo, please look out for these newsletters which are sent at the beginning of every week. One of our goals is clear, consistent parent communication. Through parent surveys, I have learned that receiving emails is the most preferred method of communication, so it is something I am committed to each week. Although I strive to ensure you have all of the information you need regarding schoolwide events, this is not an exhaustive list of everything you need to know. Please look out for specific classroom communication from your child's teacher. Also, please review our parent handbook (located on the website) for a full picture of all school policies and procedures. The school website, PTO website, PTO Facebook page, and our school twitter account are also relevant sources of school information. Finally, I have created remind.com "classes" to send quick, informal reminders. Please use the following links to receive the remind.com texts. Since remind.com may be making changes to their text messaging feature, please download the remind.com app to ensure you receive all of the messages. Finally, please feel free to email me directly if you have any questions, concerns, or see a discrepancy in dates or information. As you will see shortly, we have A LOT going on at Carrillo, and sometimes we don't get every calendar updated when events are rescheduled. I always appreciate parent input!!

Character Education

We will continue to implement and enhance our new character education program that emphasized one character trait per month. The character traits include self-control, gratitude, growth mindset, grit, purpose, social intelligence, empathy, and curiosity. Although we pull from multiple sources, we mainly use characterlab.org to guide our work and design our character education lessons. Please check out the website!

Class Placements

As you know, we created a new way of providing class placement information this year. Yesterday we prioritized the placement notifications for TK-1 since those grades were coming in for their meet and greet. Grades 2-5 should have received an email by the end of the day. With any new system, there are some kinks to work through, and I appreciate everyone's patience. Please email me if you still haven't received your child's placement information. We did not post the list on our website nor the cafeteria doors because your child's safety and privacy are our top priorities. One may consider a class roster a confidential student record and making this information public could be regarded as a violation of federal student privacy laws. Even more important than creating a legal liability is the safety of our kids. Your child's enrollment in our school, classroom room number and teacher information is private and will remain private under our watch!

No classroom changes will be made during the first two weeks of school. If you would like to set up a meeting to discuss your child’s placement, please sign up in the front office, and we will schedule a meeting after the first two weeks of school.

Open Campus for Day 1...then Closed for the school year

During the first day of school, parents will be allowed to walk their children on campus from 8:15-8:40 a.m. After the first day of school, the district-wide secure campus policy will go into effect which means you can no longer walk on campus without signing into the front office.

Parking Lot Reminders:

The main lot is for staff only. Please do not park here because it disrupts the flow of before/after school traffic. We also have part-time employees that need a space to park throughout the day.
Visitor Parking: side lot or in the overflow lot.
KOC Lot: KOC parents, part-time staff members, volunteers, and health office
DO NOT drive straight towards the KOC lot during drop off and pick up times. (8:05-8:45 and 3:10-3:45). The times that cars should go straight include TK/Preschool Pick-up (11:50-12:10) and KOC pickups before 3:10. Everyone else needs to go through the loop to avoid a collision and prevent gridlock in the parking lot.
Please review the attached parking lot map and let me know if you have any questions.

After School:

Please make sure you and your family have a plan in place for meeting your student(s) after school. Your children will be escorted to the front of the school through the main gate. You can pick your child up via vehicle (pick-up lane) or park in the overflow lot to walk and meet your child in front of the school. There are designated large blue numbers painted on the concrete out front for grades K-5. Plan to meet your student on the designated grade level number. Siblings can wait together in one of the designated spots.

Back Gate:

We will allow students to enter campus through the back gate between 8:15 am - 8:45 am. We will also open the back gate at the end of the day.

 - Why cook on back to school night?? Our PTO has organized dine outs at Rubio's in Bressi Ranch (8/21) and Luna Grill in Bressi Ranch (8/22) to earn extra money for the school. Flyers will be provided to students and must be presented for both restaurants.

Upcoming Assemblies

Flag Salute - August 23

Imagination Machine - September 13

In this assembly, actors bring student’s writing to life! All students will have an opportunity to submit a story. If , the stories will be acted out when the presenters return in February.
Joel’s Visionary Arts Assembly - September 18

Joel Anderson is an author, artist and international speaker with autism. Our students will build a better understanding and acceptance of children with autism and special needs as well as how to be a good friend. As opposed to making autism or "ability" awareness a one time a year event, we would like to build true empathy, compassion, and awareness, and this assembly will start the conversation. Our aim is that every child feels connected to our community and I am optimistic that it will include those with significant social difficulties as well. Please see the flyer attached for more information and to order his book (optional).
Medieval Trio Tales Book Order form Joel's Vision Arts

**All New Friendship Project-

The Friendship Project is a once per month after-school program designed to help kids improve social skills. Our mission is to create a bully-free environment at Carrillo Elementary by creating long-lasting friendships. We are looking for kids who need a little extra help socially. We are also looking for kids who excel in making friends. All the kids will learn tools for empathy, compassion and how to have a good time with all different types of personalities. If you are interested, please contact Wendy,wendyjgarafalo@gmail.com.
