Dear Carrillo Families,
This week we will start our full schedule for remote learning. Please see all of the detailed information below. Also, we hope you can join us this Saturday for Family Trivia Night!!
Remote Learning Schedule
Last week, Dr. Garcia sent out communication regarding the remote learning instructional schedule. I also sent a follow-up email that can be viewed here.
The most important thing to note is that the "live" minutes listed on the schedule refer to the teacher's amount of live time, not the amount that will be expected by your student. For example, since much of how we teach is in small group rotations, 60 minutes of live English Language Arts instruction will most likely translate to 15-20 minutes of live instruction per child or possibility every other day. Also, English Language Development (ELD) only applies to students learning English as a second language. Much of the additional live minutes for intervention or 1:1 support will only apply to your child if they require extra support. Thus, students will experience a mix of live lessons, independent work (both online and offline to reduce screen time), and pre-recorded lessons. Since every grade level and classroom dynamic is unique, please pay close attention to the schedule you receive from your teacher. It will all make more sense when you see how the plan translates to their classroom.
We are very lucky to have experienced teachers in all grade levels. They are working hard to create their schedule and instructional model that is age-appropriate, standards-based, and keeps pace with the curriculum. They are also finding ways to address the limitations (and current challenges) of technology. We will give each other grace as we transition to this new schedule. Please initiate any questions and concerns regarding the schedule with your child's teacher since they are the content and instructional experts.
Tips:
- Create a visible schedule for your child and hang it up near their workspace.
- Please review the schedule with your child every morning, so they know what to expect.
- Since students will be going from on and offline throughout the day, and meeting with their teacher at specific times, setting a timer (maybe on an old phone) would be a great way to remind your child when it's time to log on.
- Give yourself grace. This will be a big adjustment, mistakes will be made, and we will continue to grow!
- If your child received a work packet, please do not work ahead and wait for the teacher to use the handouts for their instruction.
- Your child will be asked to complete the iReady Diagnostics. Please do not provide any assistance, so we gain an accurate picture of their learning progress.
Specials Schedule (Music, PE, Library, STEM)
Part of the instructional schedule includes “Specials Rotations” for 60 minutes. For Carrillo, we split up this time into two blocks: one 30-minute “Specials Live” lesson and one 30-minute block for “Specials Independent” practice at the end of their day. Students will have a different special class every day, Tuesday-Friday, but each session will be at the same time each day.
Exceptions:
- The live STEM lesson will be every other week. Students will have access to an independent enrichment menu for STEM for the weeks they do not have the live lesson.
- TK-Kindergarten is not included in the PE or STEM Lessons (as typical in regular school)
- Pre-K only has library time (as typical in regular school)
**Please look for the specials time on your child’s schedule

Your student will now be able to access all Zoom links and independent activities for PE, Music, Library, and STEM from this Specials Google Classroom.
Technical Problems
I sincerely apologize for all of the technical problems your children are experiencing with the learning platform. It is nothing that the teachers are doing wrong, but instead system-wide issues with Zoom. Our Director of Technology sent an email on Friday that addresses this issue. If you missed it, please click below.

Return to School Plans
Our District is currently refining plans for our return to in-person instruction. The School Board will be meeting in a special session on September 4 at 10 am to review the plans, and we hope to have Board approval of those plans by September 15. I will be sharing more information about the plan as soon as it is available.
PTO Website
Please visit, and possibly bookmark, our PTO website https://www.myvlink.org/carrillopto/ You can also sign up for their weekly eblasts, which is a great way to stay up to date with all of the Carrillo events. Meal Service
Our District is offering FREE “Grab & Go” breakfast and lunch meal combos, for children served under the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program for the 2020-21 School year. Parents and Guardians are allowed to pick up meals for their children but must identify their child with a student ID number or lunch card.
