Dear Carrillo Families,

Thank you, PTO, for putting together a wonderful family event last night. We greatly appreciate all of the volunteers who helped with setting up, working the snack bar, and breakdown. It was a great turnout and an excellent way to come together safely as a school community. The next PTO event will be the Fall Bash on Saturday, October 16, so please mark your calendar!

Pledge Drive Begins

As a reminder, the PTO Pledge Drive is underway. It looks like students have already achieved the first incentive, "Mr. Pope Dyes his hair blue," which means we are off to a great start!

Please see the attached flyer and consider participating. The Pledge Drive is optional and greatly appreciated! I'm looking forward to my new look!

Parking Lot Changes and Reminders

We need to make some important changes to arrival times on Wednesday's early release day. 1st-5th grade families are arriving too early for the 2:10 pm dismissal causing Kinder families to get stuck in the line.

For Wednesday, 1st-5th grade families should not enter the parking lot until 1:55 pm. Kindergarten families, please try to arrive by 1:30 pm and no later than 1:50 pm. If everyone follows this guidance, we will be able to clear our kindergarteners off campus before the dismissal of 1st-5th. If you arrive too early, the overflow/trailhead parking lot is an excellent place to park and wait for the correct dismissal time. I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as we work to create effective dismissal procedures.

Other reminders to follow every day-

  1. When lining up for dismissal, please do not block the accessible (disabled placard) parking spots.
  2. If you are entering Carrillo westbound on Poinsettia, please wait in the left-hand turn lane and do not turn right on Paseo Escuela (into the neighborhood) to skip the line. If you arrive at Carrillo and there is already a line to the street, please wait until the school dismissal times to enter the parking lot. As soon as dismissal begins, the cars will flow out of the parking lot, and everyone will have a chance to move.
  3. The light at Paseo Escuela has a history of malfunctioning. The school does not have control over the light, and we make frequent phone calls to the city of Carlsbad to repair it. If you notice that the light is not cycling through all signals (especially the left turn into the school lot), please call the school (760) 290-2900, and I will head up there to help. Please note that the left turn problem is exacerbated when too many cars are going straight from the neighborhood, which prevents vehicles from turning left.

Special Election: Carrillo Polling Location

The county has once again identified Carrillo, and other SMUSD schools, as polling locations. This was not something that the School District nor I had control over. However, we will work with the registrar of voters to ensure that the use of our facilities will not inhibit our school functions or jeopardize school safety. Our Multipurpose Room will be used from September 10th-15th for voting activity (9/10 they will be setting up, poll activity from Saturday-Tuesday, then breakdown on 9/15).

The voting activity will take place on one-half of the MPR (closer to the parking lot). We will block off the "school side" of the MPR with partitions to ensure breakfast and lunch service will not be interrupted, and students will not come in contact with any poll workers or voters. All poll workers and voters are required to wear masks while indoors at all times.

Students that arrive for breakfast at 8 am on these days will need to enter campus through the black gate and use the school entrance to the MPR.

Events This Week!

TK and Kinder Back To School Night is this Thursday, September 2.

  • If your last name begins with A-K, you will attend an in-person back-to-school night from 5 pm - 5: 25 pm.
  • If your last name starts with L-Z, you will attend an in-person back-to-school night from 5:50 pm - 6:15 pm.

Masks are required for everyone two years of age and older indoors during Back to School Night. If possible, please do not bring your children to the back-to-school night as the presentation is for parents and guardians only. If you do bring your child, they must remain with you at all times. We will not have supervision on the playground, so please do not allow your child to play during the presentation. It is unsafe and disruptive to the presentations.

PreK Back to School Night-

The PreK Back to School Night is also on Thursday, September 2. Look to your teacher's communication for your presentation times.

School Picture Day, This Friday!

Friday, September 3, is school picture day for all students. Gerardy Photography, https://www.gerardyphoto.com/, will be at Carrillo (masks on) to take pictures of all students and provide a link for you to purchase photos. Students will take their masks off briefly for the photographs. School picture make-up day was initially scheduled for September 10 but has been postponed due to polling. We are working with Gerardy on a make-up day which will take place in October or November. Please stay tuned.

Room Parents-

Please consider serving as a room parent for your child's teacher. Although we are still waiting for approval to have visitors and volunteers on campus, room parents have a tremendous impact on creating a positive learning environment for students, and better connections between parents and teachers, even from a remote setting. If you're interested, please let your teacher know. You can also direct any questions to Jamie Soltau ([email protected]), our room parent coordinator.

iReady Diagnostic

Most students are now engaged in the iReady Diagnostic tests for reading and math.

Please watch this short video to learn more about the test and the personalized learning program (My Path). One of the essential points to remember is that the test is adaptive, meaning the questions will get progressively harder the better they perform. Once your child starts the test in class, please remind your child not to be discouraged if they don't know something because the exam is designed to identify what they do not know "YET" and give them a personalized learning program to move them forward in their knowledge and skills.

For more information, please read the iReady Family Guide. There is nothing you need to do at this time for iReady as your child's teacher will initiate the diagnostic process. I share this information so you can familiarize yourself with the program. Please let me know if you have any questions.
