August 3, 2020

Good morning Carrillo Families,

I hope everyone is continuing to enjoy the remainder of the summer break.

Our office staff is back to work and available to take phone calls and answer emails. However, the office remains closed to walk-ins at this time while we adjust our physical spaces and prepare to implement safety protocols. If you need to come to school due to a lack of computer access, please let know.

We have several items that require your attention this week as we prepare to begin the school year on August 18th.

2020-2021 School Model Selection

You should have received links from the District Office asking you to select either Option 1: Remote Learning to in-person when viable or Option 2: Leading Edge Virtual School which will remain online for the entire school year.  Thank you for making your selection, we realize this was a difficult decision for many families. Our office staff will receive the results of the survey today and will reach out to you if we do not have your selection. If you do not hear from us then we have received your selection request. The survey was not set up to provide you with a confirmation email. Most likely, we received your responses and are ready to place your child in a classroom.

Support for the Upcoming Year

Please email me if you have any questions, ideas, or requests for the upcoming year. Aside from taking specific teacher requests, Mrs. Keeton and I are here to help and willing to discuss your individual needs. We realize this is a momentous time for so many families trying to figure out how to adjust their work and home lives to ensure we have a successful school year. We appreciate how our community is partnering with us, working with each other, and staying positive despite these extraordinary challenges. Our children are greatly benefiting from our perseverance and positive outlook during this time. Not only will it result in their successful education but they are also able to see a real-world example of how adults use grit, collaboration, growth mindset, purpose, creativity, gratitude, and all other character traits we learn to overcome obstacles in life. Thank you for embracing this challenging time and reaching out to us if you need support.

Online Residency Verification

Residency Verification will be completed online through the Synergy ParentVUE website/application. We are asking that all parents upload their documents to the ParentVUE portal as opposed to bringing your documents to the office like has been done in the past. The portal is now open, so please complete this process sometime between today August 3, and by Monday, August 10th. Luckily, most of our Carrillo parents have already activated their ParentVUE accounts and can proceed directly to the residency verification step. While completing the residency verification documents, you will also be able to update your emergency contact information. The module also asks for birth certificates and immunization records. Immunizations are still required for enrollment. If you need special assistant or computer access to complete this process, please let me know.

All newly enrolled families should have received a ParentVUE activation code over the weekend. If you did not, please email Jennifer.Smith@smusd.org

Instructions for ParentVUE activation and residency verification can be found on our SMUSD ParentVUE page at https://www.smusd.org/departments/parent_v_u_e

Chromebook and School Materials Pickups

One of the key differences in this remote learning experience versus last spring is that we will be checking out a Chromebook to every student, and conducting regular drive-through pickups for materials. Materials will include standard school supplies and consumable curricular materials such as text for close reading/annotation, practice worksheets, and workbooks that are aligned to our new math curriculum. These physical materials will allow students to complete work offline as much as possible, as opposed to having all work done virtually. Our office staff is busily preparing for Chromebook check out the first materials pick up which will happen simultaneously. I will send a schedule for this as soon as we are ready, most likely between August 10-15. This applies to ALL students, including those that are signed up for the Leading Edge Virtual School (LEVS).

Upcoming School Year

Thank you for your patience while we continue to solidify specific details regarding the instructional program for this upcoming year. Here is what I can confirm at this time:

  • Teachers and students will be using a new math instructional program this year called Ready Classroom. We are looking forward to a greater level of alignment and consistency that these materials will bring
  • Another new resource for this year will be the iReady Assessment Suite for both reading and mathematics- This includes three diagnostic assessments which are completed at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. This diagnostic assessment will help guide our instruction to meet the unique needs of each student as well as support individualized instruction. Soon after school begins, all students will be asked to complete this online assessment to determine their specific curricular needs and then be able to access the learning games and individualized lessons that come with it. Students will no longer be using Core Lexia or Dreambox as iReady will become our primary digital learning resource.
  • School begins August 18th. However, students will only be asked to participate in half days of instruction for the first two weeks. These two weeks will be dedicated to building relationships and community within the classroom. We expect the greatest challenge of beginning the year in a remote learning setting will be establishing trusting relationships and a safe environment for learning, so this time will be greatly needed. This will also provide more time for teachers to attend PD sessions and build their instructional routines. Please expect to see community building exercises, “about me” activities, and lessons on the procedures, routines, and expectations to ensure we have a successful space for learning during the first two weeks. Mrs. Keeton and I will also be meeting with every class individually during this time to build our rapport with students as well.
  • Students that are enrolled in LEVS will be concurrently enrolled in Carrillo. This means you’ll still be part of the community and invited to all of our family events. Nicole DiRanna, formerly assistant principal at San Marcos High School, is the administrator of the LEVS program. Her email is Nicole.diranna@smusd.org
  • As soon as I have confirmed details regarding instructional schedules, workload, live instructional time, PE, music, library, schedules, etc. I will share them with you. For now, please see the FAQ documents and webinar located in the District homepage for information regarding both learning pathways. https://www.smusd.org/

Please look out for additional emails from me throughout the next few weeks. I am excited to be on this journey with all of you and I can’t wait to see the students' faces, even if it’s through a computer screen or in their cars during the pickup times. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or ideas as we navigate this together.

Thank you,
