August 4, 2021

Dear Carrillo Families,

I hope this email finds you well during these warm summer days! Mrs. Keeton and I are officially back to work and are getting very excited to start a new school year to pursue our collective Vision and Mission for our community of learners. Although I will share more about our school and our year over the next few weeks, I wanted to send a few updates and important dates, so you know what to expect and can mark your calendars now. Please let me know if you have any questions!

Residency Verification

All continuing families (those enrolled in Carrillo last year) need to complete residency verification via ParentVUE ASAP if you haven’t already done so.  Click here for more information and instructions or if you need help uploading your documents.

Helpful Tip- It is easier to complete the residency documents from a computer than a mobile device. Once you log into ParentVUE, click on the tab titled “Online Registration.” From there, you can choose 2021-2022 Residency Verification from the dropdown menu.

Class/Teacher Assignments will be available on ParentVUE on August 13th, 2021

Meet and Greet for Kindergarten, Transitional Kindergarten, and our Special Education Preschool Programs

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we will need to be creative about limiting how many families can be in the rooms at once. I will send a separate email about these events later this week, but I wanted to ensure you save the dates and times. The meet and greet will include an opportunity to see the classroom, meet the teacher, take a brief campus tour, and attend a quick Carrillo orientation by Mrs. Keeton and me. Since masks are required indoors for all staff, students, and visitors, please bring one with you.

TK and Kinder- Friday, August 13th from 3 pm - 4 pm

PreK- Monday, August 16th from 1:30 pm - 2:15 pm

New Parent Tours

August 9 and 10

If your child is in 1st-5th grade and you are new to Carrillo this year or were new to Carrillo last year and were never allowed on campus, we would like to invite you to attend a campus tour. We must keep these in small groups, so please only sign up if your child is in grades 1st-5th (PreK, TK, and Kinder families will tour the campus at the Meet and Greet). I’m excited to show off our fantastic facility, meet you in person ( if I haven’t already), and share information about our school. Members of our PTO will also be in attendance on the tours to answer questions and help get you connected. If you are interested, please sign up below. We highly value our relationships with our parents and guardians and hope that one of these times will work for you. Masks are required for indoor facilities, so please bring one with you.

First Day of School

August 17th!

As you will see below, we still do not have permission to have visitors/volunteers on campus during school hours, so you will need to say goodbye to your children at the gate or car drop-off area. We will have many staff members outside to help students locate their classrooms.

Bell Schedule

TK- 8:15 am - 11:50 am

AM Pre-k - 8:25 am - 11:25 am (no school on Wednesday)

PM Pre-k – 12:10 pm – 3:10 pm (no school on Wednesday)

Kindergarten- 8:15 am - 1:40 pm, Monday-Friday. Drop off is between 8:00 am-8:15 am daily.

1st- 5th- 8:45 am - 3:10 pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesday is early release at 2:10 pm. The earliest drop-off is at 8:00 am in the cafeteria for breakfast or TK/Kinder siblings. The gates open at 8:15 am for before school play.

Recess/Lunch

PreK and TK will both have a 20-minute recess and snack time.

Kindergarten through 5th grade will have a 20-minute recess/snack time and 45-minute lunch break. Students must bring a snack from home. However, lunch will be provided at no cost for students this year. If students would rather bring their lunch, that is fine as well. Please visit the Child Nutrition Services page for Free and Reduced Applications and the calendar of meals that we will provide. Since the Free and Reduced Lunch Applications offer more services beyond a lunch (and lunch is already free), I ask that you still complete this application if you believe it would apply to your family.

Back to School Night

Please mark your calendars for these general times. Like the meet and greet, we must limit how many people are in the rooms at once. I will send more information soon regarding these events, but please mark your calendars for now.

August 18th-5-6:30- 4th and 5th grade

August 19th-5-6:30- 1st-3rd grade

September 2nd- 5-6:30 Prek, TK, and Kinder

PTO Sponsored Family Movie Night!

I am so pleased to announce that outdoor family events are back! Our PTO is kicking off the school year by hosting a Family Movie Night on the Carrillo field on Saturday, August 28th, 2021. Doors will open at 6 pm, and the movie will begin at dusk. More details will follow.

Safe Return To School/COVID-19 Mitigation Procedures

Please click here for the SMUSD Back to School Information Graphic. Here is a quick breakdown of what to expect and some changes from last year.

Face Coverings- A two-ply face mask must be worn by all students, staff members, and visitors at all times indoors. There is no face mask expectation outdoors, but students are welcome to wear one if they choose.

Plexiglass will no longer be used on student desks.

LumiSight- Parents will not be required to complete the LumiSight screening form daily. However, I will send a Health and Safety agreement for you to review and sign, including a requirement to self-screen for symptoms daily.

Volunteers/Visitors- While I do hope to have volunteers and parents on campus this year, we do not have permission to welcome parents back on campus just yet. Please stay tuned for changes to this policy in the coming months.

Physical Distancing- With face masks on, we are not required to keep students physically distanced in the classroom. This requirement is allowing us to return to a five full-day week of instruction.

I know that is a lot of information, and I thank you for your time and attention to this email. I will send more details soon, and the information above is subject to change (a new reality of our time that I have accepted). My goal is to be a great communicator, and I have heard overwhelmingly from parents that email is the best way to keep you informed. My suggestion is to keep these emails in your inbox and refer back to them often to stay updated. Please have an excellent week.

I look forward to seeing you soon.

Thank you,

Gary Pope, Principal
