December 8, 2019
Dear Carrillo Families,

We are so filled with gratitude this week as we approach our holiday season and winter break. Thank you to the Carrillo Moms in Prayer group for providing breakfast for the staff this week and always keeping our school and staff in your hearts!

Final Camp Pendleton Food and Diaper/Wipe Collection Days!

I am also grateful to all of our Carrillo parents for donating to our food drive. We still have some work ahead to meet our goal, so please consider bringing in donations this week as well. Volunteers will be present at morning drop off Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday this week to collect the remaining contributions. The last day to donate is Wednesday, December 11.

December 13th- Flag Salute and Marine Corps Visit

We are incredibly excited to present the donations and perform for the Marines this Friday at our morning Flag Salute. We hope you will join us as well! Please see below for a general schedule and for what you need to know if you will join us.

**Please bring a photo ID and arrive early if you plan to attend this event. Please inform any of your guests as well (grandparents, aunts/uncles, etc.). We will have volunteers assisting with the computer check-in system.

7:50 am - Carrillo Singers Jr. will perform for the Marines as they eat breakfast in the MPR. Parents of Singers are welcome to watch as well but need to check-in with the computer system first.

8 am- If your child regularly eats breakfast before school, please have them enter the school through the gate and then enter the MPR from the school (not through the MPR doors at the front), so we don’t interrupt the performance for the Marines. The gate will be open at 8 am and students will eat at the outdoor lunch tables.

8:15 am-8:45 am Morning playtime and DJ before school

8:15 am - Mrs. Cummings’s class will perform for the Marines in the MPR. Parents are welcome to watch but must check-in the front office with their photo ID first.

8:45 am - Flag Salute- Each grade level will be performing their song from where they sit at Flag. If you would like a good view of your child singing, please stand toward the front (by the 2nd-grade classrooms) as opposed to behind your child’s grade level. Feel free to fill in the space behind the Marines (near their vehicles) who will be situated in the middle of the students.

**Before the final, whole school song, we will be inviting all past and present armed service members to join the Marines from Camp Pendleton to be honored.

9:30- After the Flag Salute, the grade level with the most items collected will receive a few minutes of extra recess with the Marines. The Marines will also break up into groups to visit classes and scheduled recesses. It is a great opportunity for students to interact with our local heroes!!

4th and 5th-Grade Only: Carrillo Geography Bee

For the first time, we will be holding a Geography Bee for all 4th and 5th grade students in January through National Geographic and in the same format as San Elijo Middle School. Here is the plan:

During the week of December 9th-13, all 4th and 5th-grade students will take a preliminary geography bee test during class time. This is optional for students and should only take between 10-20 minutes. After gathering the results, the top 30 scorers on the preliminary exam will be invited to the school-wide geography bee held in January. The winner of the school-wide bee will be eligible to move on to the regional bee and possible the state championship. For more information on the geo bee and to access study materials, please go to

Social Worker Change

Sadly, our part-time social worker, Rebeca Jimenez, will be leaving the Carrillo community soon to assume a full-time position at Woodland Park Middle School (her other school site). Although this is a huge loss for Carrillo, this is a great opportunity for Rebeca to concentrate her efforts and support the needs of one school. I am working with our Director of Student Services to hire a new District funded part-time social worker. Although Rebeca’s presence can never be replaced, I’m hopeful we can find an excellent new social worker that will be able to step into Rebeca’s role. Rebeca and I will be working on a transition plan and will follow up with when her last day at Carrillo will be (most likely January). Please join me in wishing her well!

Popsicle Sales (from your 5th-Grade Events Committee)

Calling all 5th-grade parents! We'd love your help with our Friday fruit pop sales. This Sign Up Genius has dates through the end of January to volunteer for. It takes about 30 min. and is really easy. Thanks in advance - all proceeds go to the 5th Grade Events Committee.

New School Lunch Items!

A few of our Carrillo Parents have partnered with our District's Child Nutrition Services department to provide feedback on the current lunch offerings and to assist in making improvements to the school lunches. In addition to achieving better quality and service enhancements, the District is now offering new lunch items that will be provided at Carrillo only during December and to the rest of the District after the new year. Please see the attached schedule and encourage your children to try out the new items. As you can see on the flyer, these new items provide a vegan/vegetarian option for students who would like to avoid meat and still eat a balanced meal full of nutritious food. Thank you to all of the parents that are assisting in this endeavor to provide healthier options for our kids!

Speak Up Survey is open until December 27th

Parents: Please take the Speak Up Survey. We only have a few people who have completed this so far so I would be very grateful to anyone who took a few minutes to get this done. The information gained is used by our District’s technology department to make improvements and plan for the future. You are welcome to come on campus to use one of our computers. Please call me, and I will set up a time for you to visit (760 290-2904).

Be a part of the conversation! Starting now, we will be participating in the Speak Up Research Project for Digital Learning. Speak Up is and was the first online research tool designed to help parents share their ideas directly with schools and national policymakers. Speak Up provides parents with a mechanism for expressing their views to the administrators at their child(ren)’s school and district about key issues impacting their child(ren)'s education.

Since 2003, Speak Up has collected and shared the views of more than 5.4 million students, teachers, and parents from all 50 states, as well as internationally. By participating in Speak Up, parents are expressing their views to a wider audience of local, state, and national policymakers as well as the business community—and contributing to the national dialogue about how best to prepare students for the future.

Speak Up is open to students, educators, and parents; it’s quick and easy to get involved.

To participate, visit: and select the Parent option.

All participation is confidential. Questions take about 20 minutes to complete.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your views with us! We need your input!
