Carrillo Elementary School

February 18, 2019

Dear Carrillo Families,

Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Invention Convention. I was blown away by the creativity, ingenuity, and hard work that students put into these presentations. Thank you, Mrs. Yates and Mrs. Yates’s family for your efforts in putting everything together!
It is clear that our students are growing as critical thinkers and we will continue to find opportunities to “fan the flames” of their curiosity. We are starting to explore ways to enhance our Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) program and are always looking for parents in these fields that can help. I would love to create opportunities for students to work with robotics, computer programing, coding, and more! Please let me know if your field of expertise can help me in this pursuit!
Chronic Absenteeism
According to the new California system for school accountability (California School Dashboard), our school needs to improve in the area of “Chronic Absenteeism.” Last year, 7% of our students fell into this distinction and it was noted by the state as an area of improvement. As a school community, we are exploring ways to decrease the number of absences. Not only to improve on the dashboard but more so because there is a correlation between long term success in school and excellent attendance. Please click on the link above and explore the other data points for our school including mathematics, English Language Arts, and suspension rate. Also, please attend our School Site Council Meeting on Thursday, February 28, where we will review this data in more detail and discuss our action plans and spending for the year. Overall, I am happy with where we are as a school and confident we can make gains in the areas of improvement!

Crazy Hair Day
Also this Friday, February 22. To reward students for surpassing the Camp Pendleton Canned Food and Diaper Drive by two pallets, we will have a whole school crazy hair day. I promised this at some point during the campaign and have been reminded by a few students every week! Please do not allow your students to bring aerosol cans of hair color to school. Use of them at home is okay, but we do not want to harm other students by having these cans sprayed in the bathroom or other enclosed spaces.
