Dear Carrillo Families,

Tax Receipts for Pledge Drive

Our PTO Treasurer can issue tax receipts for pledge drive donations upon request.  If you would like one, please email ceptotreasurer@gmail.com and a receipt will be issued on school letterhead.  

Box Tops Update

Great job, everyone! Thanks to all the Box Tops you turned in, our school received a check from Box Tops For Education™ for $1168.00. Our goal for the year is $2000. Please turn in all your Box Tops you have collected so far by February 27th.

So far the top two classrooms are

1) Falk: 606 Box Tops

2) Bejarano/Estrada: 511Box Tops

Recycling Program

We will bee ensuring students place their recyclable materials in assigned bins at school so they can be redeemed for money. PTO volunteers have also volunteered to collect cans from Carrillo households on Flag Salute Fridays and take them to Recycle Planet. So far they have collected a $42 profit which has been donated to PTO. That sum was just from their two households. The idea is to collect recyclable bottles and cans from many other Carrillo homes which will multiply that number exponentially! I will follow up with more information, a flyer, and reminders for when collections will take place.

Chronic Absenteeism

According to the new California system for school accountability (California School Dashboard), our school needs to improve in the area of “Chronic Absenteeism.” Last year, 7% of our students fell into this distinction and it was noted by the state as an area of improvement. As a school community, we are exploring ways to decrease the number of absences. Not only to improve on the dashboard but more so because there is a correlation between long term success in school and excellent attendance. Please click on the link above and explore the other data points for our school including mathematics, English Language Arts, and suspension rate. Also, please attend our School Site Council Meeting on Thursday, February 28, where we will review this data in more detail and discuss our action plans and spending for the year. Overall, I am happy with where we are as a school and confident we can make gains in the areas of improvement!

March Character Trait: Purpose

“Commitment to making a meaningful contribution to the world.” We will be using character lab website to help introduce students to this character trait.

5th-Grade Spelling Bee

March 1, 2019, from 9 am- 10:30 am in the cafeteria (parents welcome).

Please look on the Carrillo website under Programs/Spelling Bee for information to help you perform at your best. This is where you will find the format of the bee, what the rules are, study tips, and extra word lists. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact our Spelling Bee Coordinator at carrillospellingclub@gmail.com.


The mini-musical enrichment class is open to all 3rd-5th-graders. Flyers went home last week. Classes will be every Thursday from March 7-May 16 (except Spring Break) from 3:15-5pm. If your child is interested, please click on the following link:

School Site Council Meeting

Thursday, February 28. We will be reviewing information from our District LCAP meeting and analyzing our school’s data. All parents are welcome to attend. Having many voices and perspectives contributing to this conversation is valuable!

APEX Fun Run, March 5-March 15

Carrillo’s main fundraiser is coordinated through APEX, a private organization that specializes in school fundraising. What is great about using this professional company is the amount of organization and manpower they put into ensuring the campaign is a success. The company does earn alongside our fundraising which allows them to bring a level of expertise, fun, and excitement, that cannot be replicated by school staff alone. The bottom line/take home money for our school is much higher than it would be if done independently and the money allows our school to continue offering the academic programs that ensure all students success, online subscriptions, STEM lab, computers in the classrooms, family events, and much more. Last year, the campaign was a huge success and we are hoping to replicate that this year! This campaign is entirely voluntary and it is not a requirement for students to raise money.

Here are the dates:

March 5: Kick-off pep rally- students will receive their account codes and sign-up instructions. *Students will be asking for donations/pledges from March 5 to March 14

March 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13- Daily classroom visits, challenges, and character education

March 14- Fun Run (weather permitting)

Fun Run Schedule Parent Volunteers will be needed/a signup genius will be sent out

8:50-9:40- AM PreK, AM Kinder, 5th-Grade + Ms. Alexander’s Class
9:40-10:40- 2nd-Grade
10:40-11:30- 1st-grade
11:30-12:15- 3rd-grade
12:15-1:00- PM Prek, PM Kinder, 4th-grade
