Carrillo Elementary School

February 3, 2019

Dear Carrillo Families,

Thank you to all of the Carrillo families that attended the Special Someone Dance last night. We didn’t let the rain get in the way of a great time! It was so fun to see all of our students dressed up and enjoying special time with their loved ones and friends. Special thanks to Blair Mettee and Kristin Jenkins for your hard work in planning the event and ensuring everyone had a fun time. Thank you to all of the volunteers that helped out as well!

I appreciate everyone that was able to stop by the cafeteria on Friday for the Football Breakfast and coffee connection. I appreciate the opportunity to meet more of our parents in a casual setting and hopefully those who were in attendance were able to connect as well. Our goal is for all of our parents to feel welcome and engaged with our school so everyone feels comfortable asking questions, sharing your perspective and helping us improve our school to best serve all students. From now on, we will use the cafeteria as a meeting place for parents on non-Flag Salute Friday’s. Please feel free to use this time to arrange a meeting of classroom parents, arrange play dates, or just a place to sit down and have a cup of coffee before heading to work.

Text Messaging Opt-In Campaign
You probably saw the message from the District stating the following:
SMUSD Families,
SchoolMessenger “Communicate” is the notification system that SMUSD now uses for parent communication (we formerly used BlackBoard Connect). This platform allows communication across various devices and platforms, including text messaging. In order to use the text messaging option, parents must first opt-in. To opt-in you need to send a text message of “Y” or “Yes” to our district’s sort code number, 67587. A flyer with more details is attached to this email and available through Peachjar.

Please consider opting-in for these messages. Although remind.com has been working relatively well, at times it “hits a snag” and is not a reliable form of communication during an emergency. There is also some uncertainty over whether or not the text-messaging feature will continue to work for Verizon customers. Please opt-in through our SchoolMessenger system in case we need to switch over at some point or if I need to communicate during an emergency. SchoolMessenger is the same system that allows me to send these emails you are reading now.

Childhood Cancer Fundraising
Like many schools across the country, Carrillo has been touched by childhood cancer. Some of you may remember the kindergarten fundraiser held a couple of years ago to benefit the St. Baldrick's Foundation - the largest private supporter of pediatric cancer research. The family of 2nd grader Micah Bernstein is participating in a head-shaving event benefiting St. Baldrick's and invites any interested Carrillo families to show their support through a tax-deductible donation, attending the March 9 event, or joining team Micah's Minions and helping to raise money to fund better and safer treatments for childhood cancer. Participation is open to kids and adults, and head-shaving is optional, but you'll have lots of company if you decide to do it! You can donate to Micah's fundraising at https://www.stbaldricks.org/participants/scienceface2019 or join the team athttps://www.stbaldricks.org/register/participant/1829/2019/team/122219. If you have any questions, contact Jeff or Kate Bernstein at school@jsbernstein.com.
