January 12, 2020
Dear Carrillo Families,

Happy New Year!! We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a fun break with their kids. The Carrillo staff is excited to welcome the children back to school and continue to work toward our vision of creating a community of passionate lifelong learners with a strong sense of citizenship for all students. As always, these newsletters will come out before every week of school to make sure you stay informed of all events, policies, procedures, and so on.

We look forward to a great second half of the year!

This week- Mrs. Keeton and I will be reviewing our school routines and behavior expectations tomorrow in the MPR before the students’ lunch or recess. These presentations are named “Safety Assemblies” and will provide them a clear list of expectations that are designed to keep themselves and each other physically, socially, and emotionally safe. Sometimes, inappropriate games, unsafe behavior, or unofficial “rules” are created by students on the playground that requires our intervention. Please feel free to email me or call if your child comes home with information from the playground or school in general that you think we should know. It is very appreciated! Together, we can work to ensure Carrillo Elementary is a safe place for all students!

Flag Salute this Friday

We will be introducing a new character trait, “Social Intelligence,” which involves understanding the social cues around you and responding appropriately. This trait helps students build and maintain positive relationships and navigate the complexity of social situations. Here is a slide deck created by our social worker with more information about this trait and how it can be taught in school or home.

Back Gate/Ranch Pick up Reminder

All parents are required to park and meet their child at the back gate if they are picking up through the Leo Carrillo Ranch. Students may not walk through the Ranch on their own. Due to a lack of parent supervision, there have been several unfortunate incidents of student misbehavior, such as rock-throwing, walking through new growth in the garden, vandalism, etc. The Ranch caretakers have warned me that they are considering closing the Ranch parking lot for dismissal if this doesn’t improve. Let’s each do our part to ensure our mutually beneficial relationship with the ranch remains positive.

After school popsicle sales will resume every Friday unless notified otherwise. The “popsicles” are actually 100% fruit pops sold for $1 to fund 5th-grade activities.
