March 1, 2020

March 1, 2020
Dear Carrillo Families,

We are thrilled to celebrate and encourage reading this week with a Dr. Suess Birthday Celebration every day! The student council met last week and came up with the following schedule of events.

3-2 Monday, Dr. Suess hat making at 2-5 recess and K-1 Lunch.

3-3 Tuesday, Crazy socks with funny hats all day. Can we get Carrillo to wear 500 hats? “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins”

3-4 Wednesday, Get comfy! Wear your PJ’S all day and bring your favorite book to read. At a random time (to be determined by administration), we are going to have 20 minutes of D.E.A.R. time, (drop everything and read.). We are going to try to do this when everyone is in the classroom.

3-5 Thursday, at K1 lunch, 2 & 3 recess, 4 & 5 recess, we are going to make some bookmarks for your favorite book!!

3-6 Friday, whole school Literature Parade at 8:50 am.

Box Top Collection and Competition Last Week!

And the winners are….Mr. Saulino’s class with 196 box tops, Ms. Mearns’s class with 167 box tops, and Mrs. Lora with 157. Congratulations to these classes. In just a week’s worth of collection, we earned $190 for the school. Please keep clipping box tops or scanning the receipts with the app because it does make a difference!

Fifth Grade Spelling Bee, March 4

The Spelling Bee will take place this Wednesday, March 4, at 9 am. Parents of participants are welcome to attend.

Please look on the Carrillo website under Programs/Spelling Bee for information to help your child perform at their best. This is where you will find the format of the bee, what the rules are, study tips, and word lists. If you have any additional questions, feel free to contact

Parent Vue/CAASPP State Testing Reports

The District’s goal is to have all CAASPP score reporting and, eventually, class placement and report card information to be delivered through Synergy’s Parent VUE app/website. This is why you haven’t received a hard copy of your student’s scores yet this year. Those of you with middle school and high school students are familiar with this app and use it to check grades.

You should have received an email regarding activating your child’s Parent Vue account last week. To my knowledge, the activation codes were not sent on Friday as written on that email. I’ll be working with the District Data Systems department to figure out why the personalized activation emails did not go out and try to get them sent out ASAP. Once received, please follow the steps to set up an account. We are hoping to deliver class placement information via Parent VUE in August.

APEX Fundraiser and Fun Run begins March 2

We are excited to announce that the APEX Fundraising event starts this Monday, March 2. There will be a 30-minute pep rally in the morning where students will receive a pledge kit with instructions on how to participate. Throughout this week and the beginning of next week, the APEX team will visit classes for short, character education lessons and distribute rewards for participation. Contributions to the fundraiser are entirely optional. All students will receive a t-shirt and participate in the culminating Fun Run event on March 10 (for preschool) and March 11 (for TK-5th). Most importantly, every Carrillo student will continue to benefit from the proceeds earned by this fundraiser which, if successful, will allow us to continue to fund:

-intervention teachers

-technology in the classroom (Chrome books, iPads)

-special events for students and families (Bingo Night, Movie Night, etc.)

-digital resources (Reflex, Brainpop, etc.)

-Scholastic magazine

-Mystery Science

-engaging assemblies

-sound system and materials for Flag Salutes

-STEM lab and technology

-STEM lab instructor

-material resources for the classroom

-lunchtime activities coordinator

-playground equipment

-and much more!

Our site budget would be very limited without these fundraisers, so thank you SO much for considering your family's participation.

Volunteers are needed for the fun run! Please click this link for more information.
