Principal’s Newsletter
Carrillo Elementary School

November 25, 2018

Dear Carrillo Families,

I hope everyone enjoyed their time off for Thanksgiving and are excited for the next four weeks of school before winter break. We have made a few changes to the calendar so thank you for reading this newsletter.

Our character education committee and student council have decided to extend the monthly character trait, “Gratitude” through the end of December. We would like to continue to encourage students to show gratitude through giving back to others in the food drive (explanation below) and provide more time for the student council to lead their planned activities. Psychologists point to gratitude as a path toward a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life, so it doesn’t hurt to continue to work with students on this trait (see this blog from Psychology Today). As a result of this change, we will not have a Flag Salute and Award Ceremony on November 30. The next Flag Salute and Award Ceremony will be on December 7 where we will be announcing the Citizens of the Month who best exemplified gratitude as well as make a final push for the Food Drive. The final Flag Salute before the new year will be December 21 where we will welcome Camp Pendleton Marines. The next character trait, “Social Intelligence,” will be introduced at the Flag Salute on January 18 which is the first Friday we come back from Winter Break.

Carrillo’s 18th Annual Camp Pendleton Food Drive Reminder
The 18th Annual Camp Pendleton Food Drive is in full swing! This drive is a wonderful way to show our Camp Pendleton Marine families how much we appreciate the sacrifices they make for us. We are looking for donations of canned/boxed/packaged food items, diapers and baby wipes. All donations go directly to the Camp Pendleton Marine families. Please make sure all food items have an expiration date of 2019 or later. Our 5th-Grade Girl Scout volunteers will be in front of the school during morning drop-offs on Tuesday and Thursday mornings every week. Please hand your items to the Girl Scouts and inform them which grade level should get credit for the items. They will help carry your donated items to our collection area. The grade level that collects the most cans by the end of this week will receive a “Just Dance” party during recess and lunch with Mrs. Keeton and I. There will be additional grade level prizes each week. The grand prize for the grade level that collects the most cans by Thursday, December 20th will be extra recess immediately after the Flag Salute on December 21st. All donated items will be presented to the Camp Pendleton Marines at our Flag Salute on Friday, December 21st.

Last Week Recap:
We held a successful lockdown drill on Thursday, November 15. The students took the drill seriously, and the staff responded quickly and professionally. Now that we have practiced all types of drills, we will be making them more spontaneous by not giving out the dates of when they will take place. This will create more authentic practice experiences and ensure all students know precisely what to do for each exercise.
Carrillo represented well at the Must Dash for a Cure event. Thank you for all of the families that came out to support this cause. Our very own Rachel Parizek sang the national anthem to kick start the event and did a fantastic job!
Last week our Carrillo Ambassadors set up a table for students to write notes to the families affected by the Camp Fire. Many students participated and wrote very thoughtful letters. I’m very proud to see our students developing compassion and empathy for others and being good citizens! Thank you to the Carrillo Ambassadors for organizing this letter writing and sending them off to the victims of the fire.
