Principal’s Newsletter

Carrillo Elementary School

September 16, 2018

Dear Carrillo Families,

Our PTO sponsored the Imagination Machine assembly last Friday. The Imagination Machine is a favorite among students and teachers alike because it sparks student’s creativity and enthusiasm for writing. I can’t wait to see what students come up with and watch their stories acted out in November!

Principal’s Store

You may have heard that I opened my “store” on Friday. This year, students are collecting “Care Awards” from staff members that catch them doing something positive for the school community and using them as “Colts Cash” for my prize box. Students will be able to purchase, pencils, erasers, Carrillo Gear, toys, etc. Similar to Chuck-e-Cheese but instead of earning tickets from playing games, they earn Care Awards for taking care of their community. The PTO graciously donated some items to get my store off the ground while I wait for my Oriental Trading Order. I would welcome any further donations as well!

New Assistant Principal

Assistant Principal Mrs. Keeton will officially be a member of the Carrillo Family this week! Mrs. Keeton has 17 years of teaching experience at the elementary level in San Marcos Unified School District and has served in several leadership roles. She is an expert in high-quality instruction, teacher training and mentorship, and school-wide organization. She is also friendly and personable and “fits in” well with our parents and staff members. If you see her on campus, feel free to stop and say hello.

Now that Mrs. Keeton has an official start date, Mrs. Williams will be able to go back to her role as Intervention Specialist where she will continue her amazing work of supporting all students at Carrillo. I can’t thank Mrs. Williams enough for stepping into the role of Interim Assistant Principal to get Carrillo off to a great school year! She will undoubtedly make an excellent school administrator.

Birthday Celebrations

I have attached the Board Policy and Regulations from the SMUSD Child Nutrition Services . As you will read, birthday celebrations are okay, but serving food is not allowed under any circumstances. Birthdays can only be celebrated with non-food items. For instance, my daughter celebrated her 7th Birthday last week and passed out pencils and stickers, as opposed to candy, ice cream, or fruit. It is not necessary to send your child with any items to pass out. If you do, please follow the stated District guidelines and minimize any disruption to instruction.

Furthermore, please do not have siblings pulled from class to join in a celebration. This is disruptive to the learning of other students. Thank you for your understanding!

Parking Lot Reminders

Please review the parking lot map that I have attached. Unless you are in need of accessible parking, please do not park in the staff lot, especially during pick-up times (3:00-3:45). Many signs indicate “Staff Only” in this lot. Last week, we started seeing several parents park in the staff lot and walk their children through the car pickup loop to get to the car. This action is a significant safety hazard as there is no crossing guard to ensure you and your child reach your vehicle safely. Walking through the pick-up line also causes congestion to the pickup line and delays for all. Also, please do not use the KOC lot unless you are picking up your child from KOC, are a part-time staff member, or need to pick up your child from the health office. I have started to see young children cross in front of and behind cars that are pulling out which makes me very nervous! The safest pick-up procedure is to stay in your car and go throughout the pick-up loop. There are many staff members outside to assist you and your child. The other alternative is to park in the overflow lot or side lot and walk up to the pickup area. Thank you for your cooperation!

Pledge Drive

We are halfway to our goal of $75,000 for this year’s Pledge Drive, and almost one-quarter of our families have stepped up to contribute – thank you so much! We are still hoping to get participation from many more of you in the final two weeks of our Pledge Drive. We rely on our Carrillo families to help our PTO provide supplies, services, and programs for our kids that the District funds can’t cover. All donations are tax deductible so please click here or go to for the link to make your pledge or get more info about benefits. (If you’d rather pay by check, please drop it by the front office.) Many thanks!

Carrillo Classic Golf Tournament

There is only one more week left to sign up for the Carrillo Classic Golf Tournament taking place at Twin Oaks Golf Course on October 6. You do not need to organize a four-person team to participate. Just sign up as a single, and the tournament organizers will place you. We are all Team Carrillo! Click here to register or go to

Student Council applications and essays are due September 21. I have attached the application and information.
