September 8, 2019
Dear Carrillo Families,

On Saturday, September 7, we held our first PTO sponsored family event, Movie Night! Thank you to all of the volunteers that made this event possible. It was a huge success and well attended by many families. Thank you all for coming! Due to your participation in the PTO fundraising campaigns such as this week’s pledge drive, we can hold events like these all year long! We are making significant progress in the pledge drive. All donations help, and all of the funds collected go directly to the PTO fund.

REMINDERS FOR THIS WEEK

Pre-K/Preschool Back to School Night- September 10

AM @ 4:00 pm

PM @ 4:30 pm

Imagination Machine - September 13

In this assembly, actors bring student writing to life! All students will have an opportunity to submit a story that may be chosen to be performed when the presenters return in February.
Attendance Reminders

If your child needs to miss school, please call our attendance line at (760) 290-2929 to inform our attendance clerk of the absence. Failure to provide a reason for the absence within 72 hours of your child missing school will result in an unverified absence/truancy. Informing the teacher or any other office staff members other than Mary Ann White will not be sufficient. We will be updating the homepage on the website to make this attendance line easier to access.

Volunteer/Visitor Check-In

All visitors on campus must bring a driver's license/ID to sign in. We are required by the District to have all visitors sign into the Identa-kid system, which does a basic background check to ensure our students' safety. This system requires a driver's license/ID scan to process, and there is no workaround.

Lexia Core5 Update

We are excited to announce that the District will continue to provide Lexia Core5 as one of our individualized reading computer programs. For those of you unfamiliar with the program, it is an engaging, differentiated reading program specifically tailored to your student's needs. It addresses six different areas of reading including phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

At the beginning of each school year, the program is reset and students complete the placement activities to determine their appropriate, individualized starting level. Students will complete this at school next week. Their teacher will monitor his or her progress through the program and allow for time in class to work on the activities. It is important that students do this program on their own. Too much help/support from home can cause the students to be doing activities that are too difficult for them.

If your students are looking for some extra practice at home, feel free to encourage them to log onto their Clever account and play Lexia. If you have any questions about the program feel free to email our Literacy Teacher on Special Assignment: shannon.williams@smusd.org or reach out to your child's teacher. We look forward to seeing their growth on the program!

Parking Lot Reminders:

Please do not park on the side of the main lot by the solar panels during pick up or drop off. This area is staff parking only. I'm referring to the spaces that face Leo Carrillo Ranch. The reason for not allowing parents to park here is to keep the steady flow of cars through our lot. When cars pull in and pulling out of these spaces between 8-8:45 or 3:10-3:45, it stops the traffic behind them which back-up vehicles to Poinsettia. If you need to park and walk, please park in the overflow lot. Not only does this keep the traffic through our lot running smoothly, it is also the safest way to escort your child to and from the school due to the consistent sidewalk along the fence.

Important Dismissal Procedures:

- Please do not park in the center staff lot including the side lot which does not have solar panels

- For safety, please make sure your child is loading the car from the passenger side of the vehicle.

- To help the efficiency of pick-up, please do not exit your car to look for your child.

- New! Drive-Up Signs Please place your drive-up sign on your car's dashboard at pick up.

Pledge Drive (from PTO)

We have hit $10,000 in The Annual PTO Pledge Drive, this is Carrillo Elementary’s annual giving campaign and we still have a ways to get to our goal of $55,000! This fundraiser is 100% of the funds back to Carrillo!! Once we hit our first goal of $25,000, Mr. Pope will spray paint his hair BLUE!!! This year, we are offering many levels for everyone and even a monthly payment option. We have also included all of the Family Events and Spirit wear in the top tier levels. 2019-2020 school year will mark the 20th year that Carrillo Elementary first opened its doors to education and with that we have pair this fundraiser with a decorative tile that your family can create to be a part of the school’s 20th Celebration Wall for many years to come!!

The money raised helps the PTO provide essential programs and services to the school such as STEAM Lab, Running Club, Teacher support, Reading & Math Intervention, many enriching Assemblies and a ton of Program Supplies as well as so much more. All donations are tax deductible and many companies offer a match program, please visit www.carrillopto.com to make your pledge or get more info.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

Running Club

Despite the heat last week, many students starting running club with a bang, earning multiple miles in the first week! Thank you to all of the parent volunteers that came out to help. Students are always very excited about their running achievements and show me their cards everyday!

This program is so successful because of the parents who volunteer each day. There are 15 available time slots each week, and the job itself is incredibly easy but fun. The time commitment is 20-40 minutes, depending on the time slot. If you are interested in volunteering or want more information, please contact Cristen Mugford (cemugford@gmail.com).

Upcoming Assemblies

Joel’s Visionary Arts Assembly - September 18

Joel Anderson is an author, artist and international speaker with autism. Our students will build a better understanding and acceptance of children with autism and special needs as well as how to be a good friend. As opposed to making autism or "ability" awareness a one time a year event, we would like to build true empathy, compassion, and awareness, and this assembly will start the conversation. Our aim is that every child feels connected to our community and I am optimistic that it will include those with significant social difficulties as well. Please see the flyer attached and the following description of the friendship project we are supporting as well.
**All New Friendship Project-

The Friendship Project is a once per month after-school program designed to help kids improve social skills. Our mission is to create a bully-free environment at Carrillo Elementary by creating long-lasting friendships. We are looking for kids who need a little extra help socially. We are also looking for kids who excel in making friends. All the kids will learn tools for empathy, compassion and how to have a good time with all different types of personalities. If you are interested, please contact Wendy, wendyjgarafalo@gmail.com.
