Carrillo Elementary School

September 9, 2018

Dear Carrillo Families,

The vision of Carrillo Elementary School is to create a community of passionate, life-long learners with a strong sense of citizenship. Last week, our staff was provided free training in restorative practices by Anthony Ceja from the San Diego County Office of Education. Teachers and staff learned the importance of building community in the classroom as well as the school as a whole and how to teach students what it means to be a good citizen. Building this strong foundation in community teaches students to be caring and concerned about others and able to realize how their actions can be used to either build others up or break them down. Students also gain the skill of repairing the harm they have caused as we hold students accountable to their behavior in a highly supportive way.

Mrs. Keeton and I am are looking forward to continuing to train and support staff in using the restorative practices as well as plan a parent night to teach these practices to our families. Please stay tuned.

Not only are we teaching students the value of community in the classroom, our PTO Sponsored Family Movie Night was a strong example of what it means to come together as a community and build connections as citizens. The event was very well organized, attended by over 350 people, and a ton of fun! A very special thanks to Jennifer Kerschbaum, Candice Lai, the PTO Board, and all of the amazing volunteers who made this event possible.

Our PTO is committed to bringing our community together and making our school the best it can be. As opposed to making money from all of the events this year, such as the free movie night, we focus on large fundraising campaigns throughout the year. As I have said numerous times, much of what we can accomplish for our students academically, socially, emotionally, technologically, and so on is due to the financial backing and volunteer support of our PTO which is why the Pledge Drive is such an important campaign. Thank you to everyone who has contributed this year. We have a great start in the campaign but need a lot more support to reach our goal. All donations are tax deductible so please click here or go to to make your pledge or get more info.

If you are a golfer, another way to support our wonderful PTO (and have fun) is to sign up for the Carrillo Classic Golf Tournament on October 6th at 1pm at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos. It is a four-person scramble format, and the cost is $115 per person, which includes: one round of golf, putting contest, on-course contests, dinner, awards ceremony, and a JC Golf value pack. Opportunity drawing with great prizes to be held the day of the event. The last day to sign-up is September 21. Click here to register or go to

Student Council applications were sent home with our 4th and 5th-grade students this week. Some important changes were made to the selection process this year. I have attached the Student Council Duties, Responsibilities, and Selection Procedures here for more information.

Lastly, part of being a community is supporting our members. One of our 2nd-Grade community members is Micah Bernstein. Micah is a fun, intelligent, articulate, young boy and a childhood cancer survivor. Now, he has become a spokesman for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, an incredible cancer research organization which made an enormous impact in his battle with cancer. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and St. Baldrick's invited Micah and his family to be a part of this year's campaign. Below is a Q&A with Micah, a video and several photo essays of Micah’s powerful story. We are so proud to have the "Mighty Micah" attend our school and his wonderful family part of our Carrillo Community! Please check out his article by clicking here.
