Meet Mrs. Schaefer!

My name is Mrs. Schaefer and I am very excited to have your child in our class this year! Here is a little bit about me:

This will be my 8th year teaching 1st grade at Carrillo and my 9th year in the district. I love elementary education and more specifically 1st grade grade for so many reasons. The amount of academic growth and confidence building that takes place during this year is truly remarkable and I treasure being a part of that journey. When I am not at school, I love spending time with my husband Taylor, daughter Sadie and soon to be 2nd daughter, who is due Sept. 2018. We love the beach, traveling and anything outdoors!

I will be out on maternity leave from the beginning of school till the first week in March. More will be explained about this at the 1st Grade Meet and Greet, Monday, Aug. 20 & Back to School Night Thursday, Aug. 23.

 Meet Mrs. Handy!

I am very excited to be a part of your student’s journey at Carrillo this year! I share Mrs. Schaefer’s enthusiasm for first grade and look forward to helping your student become a life long learner!

Teaching is a second career for me. My previous career was in the legal field. I fell in love with teaching after having a family of my own and I began volunteering in my children’s classes. I explored my interest in education by substitute teaching in reading intervention and in grades preschool through middle school in the local area. I obtained my teaching credential from California State University San Marcos.

My goal this year is to build a strong classroom community as well as have each student feel empowered to express who they are and learn in a style that best meets their needs. I want to inspire students to take chances, much as I have in pursuing a second career, in both their learning and thinking outside of the box. I believe it is when students feel safe to do so that some of largest growth and development can occur.

My passions include spending time with my family and building/refurbishing furniture. I love all kinds of reading but especially historical fiction. I also love running and have run many marathons, half marathons and other races, including the Boston Marathon in 2017.

Please do not hesitate to contact me should you ever have any concerns or suggestions or simply need to discuss a matter about your student, the class or school. I welcome your input and thoughts. I am looking forward to a wonderful 2017-2108!
