Dear Carrillo Families,

Thank you, Colts, for another successful week of Distance Learning. I know this circumstance has been difficult for many. I appreciate the hard work in making school a priority.

Flag Salutes

We are creating pre-recorded Flag Salute videos for each grade level and hoping to have those videos available to students on Friday, May 22. There are two ways families can participate in these flag salutes.

 1) Complete the grade-level specific “shout out” form for the chance your child will be recognized during the presentation. Depending on the number of shout-outs received, we may randomly select a limited number to be read aloud during the flag salute due to time constraints, but we recognize and appreciate the grit and positivity of every Colt.

  1. 5th-grade shout out form
  2. 4th-grade shout out form
  3. 3rd-grade shout out form
  4. 2nd-grade shout out form
  5. 1st-grade shout out form
  6. TK and K shout out form
  7. Pre K shout out form

 2) Include your child in the spirit day slideshow. Have your child dress up in the spirit day theme (180 Degrees/Backwards Day), take a picture, and send your child’s picture to by May 20. Please include the grade level of your child in the subject line so it is easier for Mrs. McCoy to organize the photos. We will be making one slide show per grade level.

Carrillo’s Got Talent!

Despite the school closure, we are still holding our annual talent show! All students are welcome to participate. Students will create a flip grid video to show off their talent and it will be added to a presentation that will “air” online Saturday, May 30 at 5 pm. If your child would like to participate, please complete this form: Carrillo's Got Talent 2020!!!

Chromebook Routines/Reminders

Please have your child turn off their Chromebook every night. This will help prevent some of the problems students have been experiencing during the day. Also, please do not allow your child to drink or eat while using the Chromebook and have them store it in a safe place to prevent falling.

End of Year Procedures

We are currently working on a plan for families to pick up their children’s belongings from the classroom as well as turn in the borrowed Chromebooks and library books. This procedure will most likely take place on June 9th or 10th. More details will be provided in the coming weeks.

Library Book Return

If you would like to return your library books now, please stop by the school between 8:30-1:45 Monday through Friday. Starting tomorrow, there will be a cart under the awning by the MPR doors for contactless book drop off. We will also start sweeping through the classrooms to retrieve all library books from student desks. As we get closer to the last day of school, Mrs. McCoy will send a reminder email to your student’s SMUSD account that lists any remaining books that need to be returned.

Distance Learning Update

I hope everyone had a chance to read the latest communication from Superintendent Dr. Garcia. If not, please click the attachment: Update to Community_May 8 (1).pdf  Some key points that apply to Carrillo include:

  • Distance Learning will continue indefinitely
  • We will hold a 5th-grade promotion virtually (more details later)
  • Students will receive a second-semester summary report card. The summary will be a combination of your student’s academic proficiency level in Reading, Writing, and Math as of March 13th and his/her participation and engagement in ELA and Math class instruction and assignments after April 13th. In addition, teachers will prepare brief comments specific to each individual student. This streamlined approach will offer students, parents, and teachers meaningful feedback that will help to inform next year’s academic needs.
