May 24, 2020

Dear Carrillo Families,

I hope you are having a meaningful Memorial Day as we collectively honor those who have fallen in service to our nation. Thank you for your service to all of the Carrillo community members who have served in the Armed Forces!

Carrillo’s Got Talent!

Despite the school closure, we are still holding our annual talent show! All students are welcome to participate. Students will create a flip grid video to show off their talent and be added to a presentation that will "air" online on May 30 at 5 pm. If your child would like to participate, please complete this form: Carrillo's Got Talent 2020!!!

**ALL TALENT SHOW VIDEOS ARE DUE BY END OF DAY 5/26, so this is a timely matter! Fill out the form today to be a part of this!

Chromebook Routines/Reminders

Please have your child turn off their Chromebook every night. This will help prevent some of the problems students have been experiencing during the day. Also, please do not allow your child to drink or eat while using the Chromebook and have them store it in a safe place to prevent falling.

End of Year Procedures

During the week of June 1-June 5, teachers will begin clearing out their classrooms, bagging and labeling student belongings from desks and walls, searching for outstanding library books, completing the semester 2 report card summary, and completing their end of year check out procedures. Please note- This will be a time-consuming process and will take teachers away from their computers. Please expect the lessons this week to be less pre-recorded and face to face/”live” meetings and more independent/extended assignments to ensure the teachers have enough time to get this work completed and ready for you to pick up.

Chromebook and Library Book Return + Personal Belonging Pickup

To collect the Chromebooks and library books and provide you with your child's personal belongings from the classroom, we are asking that you come to Carrillo at the following times below. We are asking all parents to drive through the drop-off/pick up loop during the assigned times. You will first turn in any device or library books that were checked out to your child. We will also have a designated Health Desk should you need to pick up any medications or devices left at school during the closure. Then proceed to the designated classroom spot and will be handed a bag full of your child's personal belongings. Please see the attached diagram: 2020 End of Year Pick up.png Our staff will be practicing social distancing measures and will have the protective gear. To ensure the safety of our families and our team, please do not exit your vehicle. If anyone in your family is sick, please do not attend this pickup time. If you are ill or cannot participate in this pickup time for any other reason, please email me. I will arrange an exchange of items at your house.

Library Book Return

If you would like to return your library books now, please stop by the school between 8:30-1:45 Monday through Friday. There will be a cart under the awning by the MPR doors for contactless book drop off. We will also start sweeping through the classrooms to retrieve all library books from student desks. As we get closer to the last day of school, Mrs. McCoy will send a reminder email to your student’s SMUSD account that lists any remaining books that need to be returned.

Semester 2 Summary (Report Card)

As a reminder, students will receive a "semester 2 summary" instead of a regular report card. As written in Dr. Garcia's newsletter on 5/8/2020, "the summary will be a combination of our student's academic proficiency level in Reading, Writing, and Math as of March 13 and his/her participation and engagement in ELA and Math class instruction and assignments after April 13." Instead of providing a printed copy, all report cards will be delivered electronically via Synergy ParentVUE. On June 10 at noon, all parents that have activated their ParentVUE account will be able to view their Elementary student's report card through ParentVUE. If you recall, activated all parent accounts in early March. Hopefully, everyone remembers their password! You can access ParentVUE by downloading the app or this website:

**Please email me if you need assistance logging into your account or never received the activation code (it should have come from and might be in your spam folder).

Next Year Planning

Please see Superintendent Dr. Garcia’s recent community update which details the process for designing the school structure for next year. If not, please click on this attachment:SMUSD Community Update_5222020 (1).pdf  I realize that this is a major source of anxiety for many, especially those for you that are “planners” and like to have a clear picture for which to prepare. As a District, we are considering all of the health and safety guidelines as well as the needs of all families and staff members. The District is currently analyzing the survey responses that were put out last week and will take the next steps in the planning process this week. As Dr. Garcia’s message states, “we are making assumptions that we will need to provide multiple options for our families.” Please know that we are all in this together and will create a plan that meets students’ needs to the best of our ability.

To assist in our planning and staffing needs at Carrillo specifically, please complete the “Are You Returning?” survey.
