Dear Carrillo Families,

Great Kindness Challenge

This week, we will be participating in the “Great Kindness Challenge.” Our Carrillo Ambassadors (4th and 5th-grade students) have planned an entire week of kindness activities (kindness grams, canned food collection, and a kindness chain) and dress-up days.

Tomorrow, Monday (1/24) is Superhero Day

Tuesday- Wear your favorite colors

Wednesday- Crazy socks

Thursday- Carrillo spirit wear or colors (blue and white)

Friday- PJ Day

Please lookout for more information this week. At Carrillo, we pride ourselves on using restorative practices and character education to build community, empathy, kindness, and social-emotional intelligence that sustains a culture where students feel welcome, respected, and safe. I see kindness week as a celebration of who we are and a reminder that treating others on campus with respect and kindness is one of the essential values of our school and the responsibility of all members.

Recess Equipment Donation

Thanks to The Rodrigues family and SKLZ Training Center in Carlsbad for donating basketballs and soccer balls this week! With close to 800 students playing every day, we quickly wear out equipment. The Rodrigues family donated several big boxes of new sports equipment, which will last a while! I know the kids will put it to good use!

Free Online Tutoring Available

I received the message below from a former SEMS student and now an Honor Roll Student at San Marcos High School. She and two other students have created Tut-Tut Tutoring, which provides online assistance to elementary students. Please consider trying it out.

Tut-Tut is a free, certified non-profit online tutoring platform.  It connects elementary school students with honor roll high school tutors.  Our goal is to assist K-5 kids who are struggling or just need some extra help.  Our website is tut-tut.org, which was developed in March of 2020.  We have approval from the San Marcos Unified School District to provide this platform to students.  Mrs. Gomez, the Director of Elementary Education, has been one of our biggest supporters.  Additionally, my principal, Adam Dawson, recently sent out a mass email to all SMHS students encouraging them to become Tut-Tut tutors.  We have so many tutors excited to help out elementary schoolers!
